OSI Group buys a Dutch packer

OSI Group of Aurora, Ill., notorious last year for terrible food-safety issues in China where it supplied McDonald’s and Yum Brands Inc., owner of the Kentucky Fried Chicken chain, has announced it has purchased a controlling stake in Baho Food, a private Dutch meat processor that makes deli meats, convenience foods and snacks it sells to customers 18 European countries.

OSI Group was hit hard by the scandal in China that was unveiled by a disgruntled employee who exposed many serious food-safety issues.

Ten people went to prison and the company was fined $365,000, but has challenged the Chinese court rulings.

OSI Group now has 60 facilities in 16 countries.

Baho Food operates plants in both Germany and the Netherlands with its five subsidiary companies, Gelderland Frischwaren, Vital Convenience, Henri van de Bilt, Bakx Foods and Q Smart Life.

“Adding Baho Food to our OSI Europe business gives OSI a broader presence in Europe,” said David McDonald, president and chief operating officer of OSI Group.
