WTO rules against Russia

The World Trade Organization has ruled that Russia had no right to impose a ban on European pigs and pork in early 2014.

Many felt at the time that Russia was retaliating for economic sanctions Europe, Canada and the U.S. imposed on some Russians after Russia invaded Crimea and supported rebels in Eastern Ukraine.

Russia cited limited number of cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) in areas in the EU close to the border with Belarus as the basis for it ban.

But the WTO said that is not sufficient reason to ban all hogs and pork from the entire European Union.
